Obscure Oz Movie Question

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 6 years ago  or at  3:20PM on Thursday, July 10 2008 in films

Has anyone here seen the 1971 Melbourne movie Sympathy in Summer ?

It was one of the first films by Antony I. Ginnane - who was part of that embryonic Carlton film makers circle in the late 60's before he went to America

I'm trying to find a copy of it

Ohyeah  said about 6 years ago:

national sound and film archive

djbollocks  said about 6 years ago:

I would try ACMI first to see if they have a copy.

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 6 years ago:

Thanks for the tips guys!

shhh  said about 6 years ago:

this is the best i could come up with. not the film exactly but apparently has ''extracts'' of it and others from the movement

looks interesting anyway

link to record

shhh  said about 6 years ago:

...hopefully you're a student at one of those institutions

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 6 years ago:

hey shygirl

that link didn't turn up any results

so i tried searching the same database myself and couldn't find anything.

what did you find?

shhh  said about 6 years ago:

search here for ''sympathy in summer'' and check the ''film/video'' box.

this is basically a database of all the library holdings in the country so you would be able to tell who had it if anyone. by the looks this film isn't held anywhere!

the item i found though is called ''Carlton + Godard = cinema'',

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 6 years ago:

Thanks Shygirl

I've known about the doco Carlton + Godard = Cinema for a while but still haven't seen it. I'm curious though because it contains scenes from Sympathy In Summer. I'm so bummed because I only recently found out Carlton + Godard = Cinema screened at ACMI on the big screen in June this year. I missed it.... aargh!

The reason why I want to see Sympathy In Summer is because my Mum was in it! She was no actress but knew Antony Ginnane in the 60's. She was cast as a ''The Perfect Woman'' ...ha! She had no lines but appeared frequently in dream sequences as this mystery ''other woman''.... apparently she had a fair amount of screen time.

This film actually screened on the big screen in Melbourne back in its day - but only for a limited run at certain cinemas.

I've since found out I can buy Carlton + Godard = Cinema on DVD so am going to do so. Hopefully some of Mum's scene's will be in that doco.

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 6 years ago:

My Mum was pretty hot back in her day :)

shhh  said about 6 years ago:

wow! you really need to track down a copy of this movie then!

didn't they give mum a complimentary copy at the time as a keepsake?!

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 6 years ago:

naaah, it was filmed in '68. no complimentary copies back then.... waaay before our digital age

shhh  said about 6 years ago:

yes, you have a point there.

russiancaravan  said about 6 years ago:

Hey Tupelo, maybe even try contacting Anthony I Ginnane through his production co? He's still an active producer. I think he's interviewed in the new Oz film Not Quite Hollywood which is premiering at MIFF.

russiancaravan  said about 6 years ago:

Antony, I mean.

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 6 years ago:

Thanks for the hot tip russiancaravan!

I'll get onto it

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 6 years ago:

I found Antony Ginnane's email contact through IMDb - however I had to register to join IMDb Pro to get access to his contact!

I've now sent him an email and hopefully will hear sumthin' back.

Will keep ya posted!

postergirl  said about 6 years ago:

Great news!!

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 6 years ago:

Fantastic news!

I received an email from Antony Ginnane today.....

*Dear Simon

I got your email and I was very saddened to hear of your mother's untimely
death.

The film is not currently available for general sale but I would be happy to
provide you with a time coded VHS cassette for your personal use. Please
let me have your address and I will have it mailed to you.

The film premiered at the Carlton Cinema in Carlton and the Grand Cinema in
Footscray on March 14th 1971 and subsequently at the Prince Phillip Theatre
at Melbourne University.

I don't have a record of it screening at Dendy Brighton but it is possible
it did on a Sunday as a double-bill later that year.

In our files I have a black and white photograph of your mother at the
screen tests for the film taken some time in 1968. I will see if I can have
that scanned and emailed to you tomorrow.

Best regards
Antony I. Ginnane

Can't wait!

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 6 years ago:

thanks sveltes :)

djbollocks  said about 6 years ago:

That is a great story. Let us know when you get a copy of the video Tupelo,. Also the picture you posted is too large so it's cut off.

Try resizing it here

postergirl  said about 6 years ago:

You should have a special screening of the film when it arrives.

Ohyeah  said about 6 years ago:

he can't it is for his personal use.

best thread.

russiancaravan  said about 6 years ago:

Gorgeous photo! I'm so pleased this has worked out for you.

svelteslacks  said about 6 years ago:

i get goosebumps when i read this thread.

i reckon your mum would be chuffed that you've chased this up tupelo.

you a loving son indeed.

:)

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 6 years ago:

You should have a special screening of the film when it arrives.

I'm definitely having a screening for the family. I haven't told anybody about this (not even Dad nor my sister)... the plan is to invite Mum's sisters and the entire family down for a BBQ on what would have been Mum's birthday and then surprise everyone with a screening at home. Should be fun.

sister  said about 6 years ago:

i would be thrilled. perhaps my sons can track down one of the video copies of The Gun, a 10-minute student film that their parents acted in in 1985.

it was so bad, i never even got to see it.

littlearch  said about 6 years ago:

you've got that grouse photo though, that looks like yr trying to aim for a duck

postergirl  said about 6 years ago:

That's an ace idea.

sister  said about 6 years ago:

same gun, different movie.

great idea Tupelo.

littlearch  said about 6 years ago:

same idea then

Block  said about 6 years ago:

Top work, Tupelo.

sister, any more deets on your flick? Who made it? Who else was in it?

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 6 years ago:

I wouldn't mind making some DVD copies of the film to give to Mum's sisters (she was one of 5 girls)... but not sure if that is pushing the terms of ''personal use'' a lil' too far!

sister  said about 6 years ago:

err, just the fella and me. i think it accidentally turned into soft-core porn. I know who has it. The director is now a DOP on ads. He just won't give me a copy.

sister  said about 6 years ago:

i think you should give them to her and let her decide who else gets one TF.

Ohyeah  said about 6 years ago:

sister TF's mother passed away.

sister  said about 6 years ago:

oh. i'm so sorry to heat that TF.

then definitely give her sisters a copy. That's a beautiful plan.

katiepotatie  said about 6 years ago:

this thread is so good in so many ways

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 6 years ago:

That's okay Sister ...Mum would definitely want each of her sisters to have a copy but I think I'll ask Antony Ginnane for permission before making personal copies. I'm grateful he's taking the time and expense to send me a copy of the film ad I don't want to do the wrong thing by him - it is his film after all.

sister  said about 6 years ago:

he sounds like a really nice bloke.

shhh  said about 6 years ago:

goodness, this thread is making me tear up. gorgeous photo Tupelo, i can see you in her face :)

and look at those beautiful hands!

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 6 years ago:

Thanks Shygirl

Ohyeah  said about 6 years ago:

Ohyeah  said about 6 years ago:
